Welcome to Inside Subtractionism — the journal of my illustration studio, where Manchester’s buildings, stories, and architectural character come back into focus.
This blog is a place to explore the ideas, inspiration, and creative process behind my minimalist architectural artwork. Subtractionism is a style I developed to strip away visual noise and reveal the pure form of a building — its lines, its rhythm, its personality. Here, I share the thinking behind that approach, from early concept sketches to final prints.
As a Manchester-based illustrator with a passion for the city’s architecture, I’m drawn to the structures we often overlook: the lost, forgotten, hidden, and sometimes even the famous buildings we pass every day without noticing. Commuters rush by with eyes fixed on the pavement or on their phones, and the true character of these spaces disappears into the background. Subtractionism aims to bring those buildings back into view — calmly, simply, and with respect for their original design.
On this blog, you’ll find updates on new artwork, behind-the-scenes glimpses of my studio, stories from the streets of Manchester, and deep dives into the landmarks that inspire my prints. Whether you love architectural illustration, contemporary art, or the history and culture of Manchester, this is where you can follow the journey and see the city through a different lens.
